Benjamin Mays High Students Get Hands-On Business Career Insights

Atlanta Teens Explore Careers at Delta Community Credit Union
About 30 students from Benjamin Mays E. High School in Atlanta recently took a field trip to Delta Community Credit Union’s Administrative Center to learn about various careers in the business world. The students who attended are from all high school grade levels and are members of Future Business Leaders of America, an organization focused on providing youth with business knowledge and experience.
During their visit, students participated in a financial education workshop and received presentations from various departments at the credit union.
The students also heard from representatives in Branch Delivery, Business and Community Development, Human Resources, and Marketing, who explained their daily functions and the skills and experience needed to hold their positions.
“We are thrilled that our students could spend time with Delta Community’s leaders to learn about the different roles and responsibilities that contribute to an organization’s success,” Kevin Calhoun, Benjamin Mays’ business education teacher, said in a statement. “As young, career-oriented individuals, this was a truly impactful event that will benefit them as they set out to pursue their future goals.”
The field trip was the first time Georgia’s largest credit union hosted students at its Vinings campus for a career-related event. The event came about after Delta Community awarded Benjamin Mays a $1,000 grant from its Schools Program earlier this year.
“I was already interested in finance but this helped me learn about other aspects of the business, such as product marketing and advertising,” Jeremiah Hughey, a senior at Benjamin Mays High School, said in a statement. “The presentations were really interesting and helped broaden my understanding of the industry.”
The students were also made aware of Delta Community’s Annual Scholarship Program and its HBCU Scholarship Program, and they were encouraged to apply.
In addition, they also learned about the credit union’s High School Apprentice Program as a pathway to gaining experience in the financial industry.
“As good corporate citizens, we are committed to supporting our local youth by helping them become future leaders of metro Atlanta,” stated Jai Rogers, Delta Community’s vice president of Business and Community Development. “We enjoyed spending time with such business-minded teens and providing them with a unique and valuable experience.”
