85th Anniversary Message from our CEO

Delta Community 85th Anniversary
Celebrating 85 Years! Left: Credit Union employees in 1946. Right: CEO Hank Halter with WXIA-TV’s Atlanta & Company host Cara Kneer.

Dear Members,

This month, we proudly celebrate Delta Community Credit Union’s 85th anniversary, a milestone made possible by you—our valued members. Since our founding in 1940, we have focused on delivering exceptional service, superior value and trustworthy advice on the essential banking and lending services every household needs.

Delta Community was originally established by eight Delta Air Lines employees who wanted to ensure their co-workers and neighbors had access to fairly priced credit. They purposely organized as a credit union given the not-for-profit, cooperative structure of the charter. Their purpose and principles continue to guide everything we do.

Over the decades, Delta Community has grown into Georgia’s largest credit union, now with more than $8.7 billion in assets and serving more than 513,000 members. We operate 32 branches—with two additional locations opening soon in Conyers and Locust Grove—and employ a team of 1,350 professionals dedicated to serving you. As the 37th largest credit union in the United States, we are proud to offer membership to those who live or work in 16 metro Atlanta counties or are employed by one of more than 140 businesses.

Unlike for-profit banks and credit card companies, credit unions focus solely on providing return to their member-owners, not institutional or private investors. While credit unions pay many federal, state and local taxes, we are not subject to federal income tax since our earnings are retained and leveraged for the benefit of our membership as a whole. We reinvest earnings by offering lower loan rates, higher savings yields and reduced fees. In point of fact, Delta Community members save thousands of dollars over the life of their loans and benefit from our consistently competitive deposit rates. Delta Community also allocates two percent of annual earnings to fund youth development, college scholarships and financial education programming in our local communities.

As Congress considers cost reductions, spending limitations, tax reform and other broad fiscal policy changes this year, the traditional, for-profit banking industry is likely to lobby for elimination or new restrictions on our long-standing federal income tax exemption. Such a change would fundamentally alter how credit unions operate, jeopardizing our ability to offer the financial benefits and community investments that set us apart. Elimination of this exemption would adversely impact more than 140 million consumers who rely on credit union services today to manage their personal finances.

To protect the credit union charter, Delta Community actively participates in advocacy efforts at both the state and federal levels. In addition, we believe educating our members and the community about the credit union difference is essential. I recently spoke with Cara Kneer from Atlanta & Company about Delta Community, and I invite you to tune in to the segment airing at noon (ET) on Wednesday, March 5 on WXIA-TV—just ahead of Delta Community’s milestone anniversary date on March 8.

We remain as committed as ever to serving our members and strengthening our community. With your continued support, we will reach our 100th anniversary and beyond. Thank you for the trust you place in us.

Sincerely,

Hank Halter

Chief Executive Officer

Maximizing your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) contributions is a smart move for securing your financial future. With tax season in full swing, now is the perfect time to ensure you're taking full advantage of your IRA’s benefits.

Contributing the maximum amount to your IRA offers valuable tax advantages. Additionally, maximizing your contributions helps you harness the power of compounding growth, increasing the long-term potential of your savings.

For the 2024 tax year, the contribution deadline is April 15, 2025. The IRS limits for 2024 and 2025 allow contributions of up to $7,000 for individuals under age 50 and $8,000 for those 50 and older.

If you’re a Delta Community IRA owner, you can conveniently make both prior-year and current-year contributions using Online Banking. Don’t miss out on this opportunity—act now to take full advantage of your IRA benefits before the deadline!

Aurora Day Camp received $7,500 for their HOPE Child Savings Account (CSA) & Financial Wellness Education program. The grant will fund their Support for Children with Cancer and their Siblings Program. Aurora Day Camp is a response for families dealing with these devastating medical crises. The organization brings hope, strength and joy to children with cancer and their siblings in greater Atlanta.

Silence the Shame, Inc. received $10,000 for their Youth Mental Wellness COPE Clinic. This grant will increase mental health awareness and knowledge among young people. In addition, the grant will help to enhance vocational and stress management skills and foster leadership and advocacy among young people and caregivers. Atlanta Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Inc. received $10,000 for their Volunteer Recruitment, Retention and Engagement Program. This ensures they are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge to effectively advocate for children in challenging circumstances.
