Cleveland Elementary Wins $10K for Community Project Supporting ESL Families

Cleveland Elementary School in Fayetteville was awarded the $10,000 grand prize in a community service contest for metro-Atlanta schools.
Organized by Atlanta radio station Star 94 and Delta Community Credit Union, the eighth annual Give Back Giveaway invited metro-Atlanta students to organize service projects that positively impact their communities.
For their service project, students at Cleveland Elementary supported ESL (English as secondary language) families. Outreach was organized through the Amigos Club, a tutoring and mentoring organization spanning elementary, middle, and high schools. Students in the Amigos Club held events for the ESL community, as well as collected and donated items such as costumes for Halloween and book character day.
Another donation drive is scheduled in December, which will give holiday pajamas to families.
Students at Cleveland Elementary learned they were the big winners during a surprise pep rally at the school last week. During the event, Delta Community representatives, along with radio host Jenn Hobby and members of Star 94, congratulated the students and presented them with a giant check.
Four additional schools also received awards. Hill City Elementary in Jaspar placed second and received a $2,000 award. Babb Middle School in Forest Park, Lamar County High School in Barnesville, and Villa Rica High School in Villa Rica were contest finalists, and each school received a $1,000 award.
