Youth Month at Delta Community
This April, we’re celebrating National Credit Union Youth Month at Delta Community! One of the most valuable lessons that we can teach our children is how to save and spend wisely.
The “Catch Me If You Can” Youth Savings Sweepstakes Challenge is a great way to establish a tradition of saving with your children. Help your young saver(s), ages 12 and under, set a savings goal to achieve by April 30. Work with them to identify creative ways to earn money and deposit to their Delta Community Youth Savings Account throughout the challenge, and we’ll select 10 winners by random drawing to match what they’ve saved during the contest, up to $100 each! To register for the challenge, complete and return the contest entry form9 for your saver(s). For more information, and to start the challenge, visit our website.
HBCU Scholarship Application Period Open
Delta Community will award $20,000 in scholarships throughout 2022 to students of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Our first HBCU Scholarship entry period is now open and will run through April 30. If you know an exceptional student attending an HBCU or a graduating high school senior who has received an official acceptance letter to one, tell us why they deserve to receive a $5,000 scholarship. You may also nominate yourself. Delta Community will select two winners to each win a $5,000 award from among the most compelling submissions.
Philanthropic Fund Grants Awarded in March
We recently presented three more grants from our 2022 Philanthropic Fund, totaling $15,000 to the organizations listed below:
- True Colors Theater Company, pictured above, accepted a grant of $2,500 to go towards their mission of celebrating the rich tradition of Black storytelling while giving voice to artists of all backgrounds. The grant will help fund their Next Narrative Monologue Competition, where students will have the opportunity to compete for a spot in the National Finals in New York City.
- Literacy Act, Inc. received $5,000 for their Technology Educational Support program. Their mission is to build better futures by empowering adults with literacy, life and work skills to break the intergenerational cycle of low literacy and poverty.
- Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation was awarded $7,500 for their Safe and Stable Homes (SSH) Project, which helps low-income renters obtain safe and stable housing from landlords. In addition, volunteer financial coaches provide their clients with financial advice for budgeting, debt management and credit repair.
The Delta Community Philanthropic Fund will invest a total of $125,000 throughout 2022 in 20 metro Atlanta non-profit organizations that support the physical and financial needs of people who live within the communities we serve.

- Keep Your Computer’s Data Secure, Even When Getting Rid of the Computer: Many of us are pretty dependent on our personal computers (PC) to assist in managing our lives, and that means we tend to store a wide range of personal information—our data—on them. From family photos and videos, music collections, medical and legal documents, to our resumes and examples of our work, the digital record of our lives tends to accumulate on our computer's memory drives, and probably grows larger over time. This information is valuable to us, and, potentially, could be valuable to a hacker, especially any financial and legal documents or financial account information. Information that is valuable should be protected from loss or theft, and it is well worth investing time (and maybe money) to safeguard your private data.
- 2021 Tax Documents to Hold On to After Taxes Are Filed: The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) advises that tax filers should hold on to any records that will validate any itemized tax deductions or tax credits that are claimed on a 2021 tax return. If the documents—either in paper or digital form—will be used to establish any tax claims for last year, then keep them for several years after filing taxes this year. Details on how long to hold on to filing documents vary, as the IRS is particular about the time limitations for managing different types of records.
- Top 7 Tips for a Smooth Home Loan: From Getting Pre-approved to Making an Offer: When getting a home loan, it’s important to carefully track and manage your finances to help avoid financing delays. It sounds simple, but staying in your current residence, sticking with your current job, and keeping your existing financial accounts all matter to the financing company and demonstrate fiscal stability.
