Delta Community hosts Cool Cash Money Camp

Newnan-Times Herald

Coweta youngsters were able to learn all about money and budgeting during Delta Community's Cool Cash Money Camp last week.

The Cool Cash Money Camps are free and started in 2014. The camps were held June 8 and marked the first time the camps were held in Newnan. The camps were held at the DCCU on Highway 34 and are designed to help children learn about money while having fun, according to the DCCU website.

Two sessions were held, Cool Cash Elementary School Camp and Cool Cash Middle School Camp. Both sessions included games and an opportunity for students to share their thoughts. The elementary session was held in the morning and introduced youth to money, how to earn, how to give, how to save and how to budget.

The middle school session was held in the afternoon and helped students understand how their decision impacted real life, according to DCCU. The middle schoolers also learned about budgeting, insurance and credit basics.

The classes were taught by DCCU employees from its financial education center and community development team. In an email statement, Reina Jones, assistant vice president of community development at Delta Community Credit Union, said community involvement is important to DCCU.

"Delta Community is always looking for opportunities to bring financial literacy and education to the communities in which we are privileged to operate," Jones said. "With two branches in Coweta County, we are thankful that families working and living in the area have allowed us to become part of their community, making it an excellent location to hold a Cool Cash Money Camp."

Each year for the past decade, the camps have been held throughout metro Atlanta and have always been well received and highly rated by those that attend, Jones said.

"We are thrilled we could provide the invaluable learning experience to children and teens in Newnan and its surrounding communities this year," she said.

At the end of the camp, which lasted about an hour and a half, students received a certificate of completion, a DCCU goody bag and light refreshments. Students were also extended an offer to open a DCCU savings account with an account opening match up to $100.
